But the line between fiction and reality is blurring. Around the world, smart cities are shifting from concept to construction, and they’re beginning to reshape how we live, move and connect.
Vertical Cities Are No Longer Fiction
The towering skylines of futuristic cinema are finding real-world counterparts. Tengah Forest Town in Singapore is rising as a high-density, car-free urban district, complete with skybridges, smart energy systems and abundant green space. Whereas China’s Xiong’an New Area is incorporating underground logistics tunnels, easing surface congestion while maximising land use above ground.
These aren’t just feats of engineering, they’re rethinking the whole urban experience.
AI Is Quietly Taking the Helm
Smart cities are already harnessing artificial intelligence to run more efficiently such as Dubai which is deploying predictive policing to identify crime patterns before they escalate. A digital replica of Singapore simulates city-wide systems in real time, from energy to traffic to emergency response. In Japan, Toyota’s Woven City is testing robots as concierges and companions, integrated into the rhythms of daily life.
This isn’t distant innovation, it’s live testing of how cities will self-manage.
Green Utopias Are in Progress, But There’s Still A Way To Go
Rather than warnings of collapse, cities are attempting bold climate solutions. While NEOM remains under construction, it’s pioneering a new blueprint; a city powered entirely by renewables, designed from the ground up with sustainability at its core. Additionally, Xiong’an has adopted sponge city systems to absorb rainwater naturally and reduce flooding. In Singapore, vertical farms are now part of housing estates, cutting food miles and bringing production closer to home.
These initiatives aren’t complete, but they signal where the urban response to climate change is headed.
Transport Is Entering Its Smart Phase
The flying cars from Back to the Future may still be in prototype mode, but transformative transport is already here. Dubai’s hyperloop aims for speeds exceeding 1,000 km/h. Cities like Singapore and Shenzhen are running autonomous taxis, shifting mobility from manual to intelligent. Tokyo is equipping roads to communicate with vehicles, optimising safety, traffic flow, and maintenance.
The next commute may feel a lot less ordinary than it looks.
